If you are going to live in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, you have to like winter. This year we started off the season early with the first real snow fall of the season happening the week after Iceman in November. Some might have been happy to see the snow fly so early (2 feet of snow) but I was not quite ready for winter. Don't get me wrong I love winter, skiing, snowbiking, frostbite what more could you want?! But I could have gone for one last week of riding my mountain bike. It was time to put my mountain bike away for the season and get out the Farley.
In the next few weeks, I would snowbike, ride the trainer a little, and finish up the UP Cyclocross series. To prep for the final race they had to use a snow blower and shovels to remove (most) of the snow from the course. This was a race to remember. Next time I think I will wear flat pedals and snow boots.
Off season: My off season has been spent doing some strength training, snowbiking, coaching young alpine racers at the ski hill (I have the cutest group on the entire hill ask anyone), and student teaching. If you have a snowbike and haven't visited Marquette to ride you should plan a trip before the snow melts! The trails are incredible! Marquette is such an active town that even after a foot of fresh snow the trails will be ready to ride within a day maybe 2 if we keep getting dumped on!
My favorite place to ride in the winter is the North Snowbike route. Maybe it is because I can leave from my house and be on single track in less than 5 minutes... The South snow bike route can also be fun! This snowbike route is groomed with a snowmobile, and when it is firm can be a roller coaster ride cruising top speed down the hills!
So if you are thinking about coming up to ride, just do it! You will not regret it! If you need a map or some trail recommendations stop by Quick Stop Bike Shop on Third St!
